Info page for students
Dear students and teachers,
As Christmas and the New Year approach, I want to wish you and your families a peaceful and joyful holiday season. I hope you find time to relax, recharge, and enjoy being with your loved ones.
Firstly, I want to thank each one of you for a fantastic autumn season. Your enthusiasm and commitment to Bollywood dancing and classical Kathak have made this season unforgettable.
I would like to extend my special thanks to our teachers. Sanna Soni, who is currently on maternity leave, is a valued member of our team. We eagerly await her return and the start of her leading the advanced group classes sometime in the spring. Our new Kathak dance teacher, Karmen Kollar, has brought fresh energy and inspiration to our dance school. Her classes will resume in March, and we look forward to learning more about the beautiful language of Kathak dance. We’ll try to find a suitable day/place/time for everyone, so we can extend and refine the choreography learned in the fall for our spring performance. I will send out a survey about this.
Let’s then turn our focus to the upcoming year. The spring season begins in January. We have prepared something special for you: a short course in Rajasthani dances! This is a unique opportunity to dive deeper into India's rich dance heritage and learn new, captivating dance movements. The course will be held at the Voisilmä Dance Hall on Tuesdays from January 16th to February 13th (5 sessions) from 17:45 - 19:00, led by Mari Moilanen. After the ski break, open level Bollywood classes start on February 27th, continuing at the same time and place every Tuesday until the end of April. This spring, we will dance to the Indian version of Uptown Funk.
In Naantali on Sundays from January 14th to February 18th, from 16:00-18:00 (possibly 15:00-18:00), we will practice three choreographies for the spring show (Flamenco Fusion, Bellywood, and Kollywood). I will send out a survey to everyone who has been practicing these choreographies, hoping we can arrange joint practices so that everyone who wants to perform can be present. On March 3rd, from 16:30 -17:45, the Uptown Funk choreography also starts in Naantali. Before this (starting at 15:00), we can arrange additional performance rehearsals.
In Turku at the Moon Dance Studio, advanced classes begin on Thursday, January 11th, from 18:30-20:30, continuing until the end of April.
May is reserved for spring show rehearsal sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The spring show will be held on May 19, 2024, in the afternoon around four to five o'clock. The exact time will be confirmed soon. The venue is the familiar Aurinkobaletti Theater Hall in Manilla. The show is a great opportunity to showcase your skills and what you have learned. I want to emphasize that everyone who wishes to perform can do so; I encourage you all to actively participate in the rehearsals. The only requirement is to know the choreography and smile (or express), perfection is not necessary. People who come to watch the show pay for it, let’s give them our best :)
I sincerely hope that you will join us for the spring season. Classes, especially at Voisilmä, which is a small hall, can fill up quickly, so I warmly recommend registering as soon as possible to secure your spot.
Thank you once again for your contributions, enthusiasm, and special thanks to our teachers Sanna Soni and Karmen Kollar. Big hugs also to the Åbolly Dancers dance group! You represent us magnificently, such a fantastic team, I am truly proud of each and every one of you!
I look forward to seeing you again next year and continuing our dance journey together. And bring your friends who might be interested in Indian dance to the first class of the spring season. Newcomers can try out the first class for ten euros.
Gift idea for a friend: Åbolly gift card!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
